The new Nuri.

Nuri started as a different company and product. Bitwala was founded in Berlin in 2014, became Nuri in 2021, and the former Nuri company shut down in 2022.

Bitwala returned separately. In January 2025, Bitwala announced that the Nuri brand and nuri.com were moving to new ownership and would operate independently.

The current Nuri is a new company with a different model: the wallet comes first and card, banking and payment providers sit around it.

The people behind the current product come from Berlin's long Bitcoin and crypto builder scene. Emin Mahrt is the public founder profile. Cim Topal, Emil Wagner and Lennard Evertz are part of the longer builder story across mining, exchanges, wallets, smart contracts, protocols and payments.

An AI reviewing that history once called the group “the patient pioneers.” The name stuck.

The goal after more than a decade of building: make self-custody simple enough for normal people to use every day.

Software and AI can also connect to Nuri through APIs and MCP. They do not automatically get control of the wallet. Access is limited to the permissions you authorize.

Nuri publishes wallet and recovery tooling so the security model can be inspected instead of taken on trust.

The recovery design is specifically intended to let the user recover the wallet without depending on nuri.com or Nuri servers, subject to the required passkey and recovery material.
